Substance misuse, whether intentional or unintentional, is a frequently encountered condition in the hospital setting. The inpatient APP may encounter patients hospitalized for these specific conditions, or the substance misuse may be complicating the clinical picture while the patient is being treated for another condition. Substance Overdose & Withdrawal aims to increase your knowledge on common substances, e.g., alcohol and opioids, encountered in the hospital setting.Â
Course Objectives
- Review common drugs (or substances) encountered in the hospital.
- Describe the effects of these substances on the brain and body.Â
- Identify the clinical manifestations of substance overdose and substance withdrawal.Â
- Review the ICU admission criteria for patients with clinical manifestations of overdose or withdrawal.Â
- Discuss treatment of substance overdose and withdrawal.Â
